Acht 1737 Riar na Córa (Teanga) (Éirinn)
The 1737 Administration of Justice Act (Language) (Ireland)
Acht 1737 Riar na Córa (Teanga) (Éirinn) / The 1737 Administration of Justice Act (Language) (Ireland)
Cuireann an tAcht seo cosc dáiríre ar úsáid na Gaeilge sna cúirteanna abhus. Rinneadh reachtaíocht den chineál seo a aisghairm nó a athrú níos nó ná 100 bliain ó shin i Sasana, sa Bhreatain Bheag, i nAlbain agus sna 26 chontae. Le haird an domhain a tharraingt ar fheidhmiú leanúnach leatromach an Achta 1737, reáchtáil POBAL sraith de chomhdhálacha, seiminéir agus cruinnithe le abhcóidí, dlíodóirí, polaiteoirí agus saineolaithe iomráiteacha idirnáisiúnta. Mheall muid tacaíocht as cuimse ó chuairteoirí ó thar sáile, ó Graham Fraser, Choimisinéir na dTeangacha Oifigiúla, Ceanada san áireamh, a thug a chéad chuairt go dtí na 6 Chontae ar chuireadh uainn.
D’éirigh le POBAL dúshláin suntasacha a chur roimh an Achta seo, agus tionchar tábhacht a imirt ar pholaiteoirí na sé chontae i rith an ama.
This Act effectively bans the use of Irish in the courts here. This type of legislation was repealed or altered over 100 years ago in England, Wales, Scotland and the 26 counties. To bring the continuing discriminatory operation of this Act to the attention of the world,
POBAL organised a series of conferences, seminars, meetings with barristers, lawyers, politicians and renowned international experts. We attracted unprecedented support from visitors from abroad, including from Graham Fraser, Canadian Commissioner for Official Languages who made his first visit to the 6 counties at our invitation.
POBAL succeeded in mounting significant challenges to the continued application of this Act, which have exerted considerable influence on six county politicians ever since.
