Tá An Droichead i ndiaidh obair a chríochnú ar chartlann obair abhcóideachta agus taighde a rinne an grúpa chearta teanga, POBAL, thar scór bliain. An rud a bheas in an chartlann ná taighde agus tuairiscí de chomhdhálacha a d’eagraigh POBAL thar na blianta in éineacht le cuid de na saineolaithe teanga is mó ar domhan. Déanfaidh an tAire Pobal Deirdre Hargey seoladh ar an chartlann ag Cnoc an Anfa ar 9 Bealtaine.
Ag labhairt ar an chartlann úr, dúirt Príomhfheidhmneach An Droichead Pól Deeds,
“Beidh an chartlann seo mar acmhainn iontach do dhuine ar bith a bhfuil ag iarraidh tuilleadh a fhoghlaim faoin fheachtas stairiúil ar son chearta teangan ins an tréimhse thart ar Chomhaontú Aoine an Chéasta, agus ó shin amach. Ag an phointe cinniúnach seo don teanga ins na Sé Chontae, agus an Bille Féiniúlachta agus Teangacha sa reachtaíocht don chéad uair, tá lúcháir orainn gur iarr iarstiúrthoirí POBAL orainn an chartlann seo a chuir ar fáil ar ár suíomh, androichead.com.
Bhí An Droichead i gcónaí go mór taobh thiar de shaothar POBAL agus tá lúcháir orainn a bheith ceangailte leis an troid ar son aitheantais don Ghaeilge anseo.”
Ag gabháil buíochais leis An Droichead, dúirt Janet Muller, iarstiúrthóir POBAL,
‘Dúinn uilig a d’oibrigh den eagraíocht thar 22 bhliain, is ábhar bród é an obair nuálaíoch a chruthaigh muid féin. Nuair a chéad thosaigh muid ag díriú ar iomlán tosca sainiúla na teanga sna sé chontae, ní raibh eiseamláir dá leithéid céanna romhainn. D’éirigh linn áfach, tógáil ar streachailt na nGael ó thuaidh ó bunaíodh an stáit. Sa lá atá inniu ann, is beag oibre abhcóideachta Gaeilge atá ar bun nach léiríonn go rí-shoiléir tionchar agus cur chuige ceannródaíoch POBAL. Beidh An Chartlann ar shuíomh nua An Droichid ina dúshraith tábhachtach do na glúnta atá le teacht. Molaim go hard samhlaíocht is díograis An Droichid ar son na Gaeilge.’
Dúirt an tAire Pobal Deirdre Hargey MLA,
“Is gné shárluachmhar dár n-oidhreacht é saothar na oibre cartlainne. Is féidir go háirithe, leis na glúnta atá le teacht, an chartlann seo a úsáid mar áis foghlama - cartlann a insíonn scéal an chatha ar son chosaint na Gaeilge. Thig leis, chomh maith, a bheith mar phointe taighde do staraithe agus scoláirí na heolaíochta sóisialta. Beidh sé taifead déanta, agus aitheantas tugtha don ról a d’imir Janet Muller agus POBAL ar son an teanga.”
An Droichead has completed work upon an archive of the advocacy and research work undertaken by language rights group POBAL over two decades. The archive will contain research and reports of conferences POBAL organised over the years with the world's top language rights experts. 'An Droichead's POBAL Archive' will be launched in Stormont on 9th May by former Communities Minister, Deirdre Hargey MLA.
Commenting on the new archive, An Droichead CEO Pól Deeds said,
"This will be a fantastic resource for anyone seeking to learn more about the historic campaign for Irish language rights in the period around and since time of the Good Friday Agreement. At this decisive moment for the language in the north of Ireland, when an Identity and Language Bill has been placed Irish language legislation on the statute book for the first time, we are delighted to have been asked by POBAL's former directors to make this archive available on our website androichead.com.
An Droichead was a strong supporter of POBAL's work and we are honoured to be associated with their contribution to the fight for recognition of the language here.”
Thanking An Droichead, Janet Muller, former director of POBAL, said,
“For everyone who worked in POBAL over 22 years, the original work that we created is a source of immense pride. When we started looking into the various aspects of Irish language promotion in the North, there was no blueprint. We succeeded, however, in building on the efforts and struggles undertaken by Gaels in the North from the foundation of the state. Today, there is very little Irish language advocacy work that you could point to which doesn't in some way show signs of POBAL’s impact and pioneering approach. The new archive on An Droichead’s website will provide an important knowledge base and indeed a cornerstone for the generations of activists to come. I highly commend An Droichead’s innovation and dedication to the language.”
Minister for Comminities Deirdre Hargey MLA, said,
“Archival work documents an invaluable part of our heritage. This archive in particular, telling the story of the fight for and preservation of the Irish language, can be used by future generations as a learning resource, while also providing a reference point for historians and scholars in the social sciences. It will record and acknowledge as well the huge contribution that Janet Muller and POBAL has made to the language. “
