Thug An Droichead cuairt ar Scéim Chónaithe Ollscoil na Banríona an tseachtain seo chaite, le tacaíocht a thabhairt do na mic léinn atá ag cuir faoi i mbliana ins an lóistín lán-Gaeilge atá curtha ar fáil ag Ollscoil na Banríona. Tugadh comharthaí slándála, comharthaí éascaithe, agus earraí Gaeilge éagsúla dóibh.

Bhí an méid seo le rá ag Fionnuala Nic Thom, Oifigeach Forbartha in An Droichead:

“Tá an Scéim Chónaithe ina tearmann teanga do phobal labhartha na Gaeilge san ollscoil.  Is spás sábháilte é, áit a dtig leis na cónaitheoirí a gcuid muiníne sa Ghaeilge agus iontu féin a chothú.  Tá sé tábhacht do na Gaeil óga seo go bhfuil an Ghaeilge le cluinstin agus le feiceáil, agus ina cuid de shaol ollscoile s’acu ag Ollscoil na Ríona, Béal Feirste.”

Is é seo an chéad bhliain den Scéim Chónaithe ins an Ollscoil, tionscadal a tháinig ó fheachtas de chuid an Chumainn Ghaelaigh in Ollscoil na Banríona. Chinn an Ollscoil anuraidh, go gcuirfeadh siad lóistín ar fáil do chainteoirí Gaeilge ins an Ollscoil. Thacaigh An Droichead leis an Chumann i rith an fheactais, agus i gcuir i bhfeidhm na scéime.

Dúirt Ciara O’Gara, mac léinn ón Scéim Chónaithe:

“Is céim chun tosaigh é an scéim seo do phobal na Gaeilge sa tuaisceart, ag cuidiú leis an Ghaeilge a ghlacadh amach ó na seomraí ranga agus í a bheith ina teanga bheo, teanga a úsáideann daoine go laethúil agus go nadúrtha sa saol.”

Dúirt sí, chomh maith, go mbíonn deis acu bheith páirteach sa phobal Gaelach i mBéal Feirste ar bhealach speisialta.

An Droichead visited the Queen’s University Irish Language Residential Scheme last week, to show our support to the students who are residing this year in the Irish-speaking accommodation that has been made available for the first time by the university. Safety signage, facilitational signage, and other Irish language items were provided to the residents.

Fionnuala Nic Thom, Development Officer in An Droichead, said this:

“The Scéim Chónaithe is a language sanctuary for the Irish speaking community in this university. It’s a safe space, where the residents can grow their confidence in their Irish, and in themselves as people. It’s important for these young Gaels that the language is seen and heard, and part of their university experience in Queen’s.”

This is the first year of the scheme in the university, a project that grew out of a campaign by the QUB Cumann Gaelach. The university made the decision last year to provide accommodation for Irish speakers in the university. An Droichead has supported the Cumann Gaelach throughout the campaign, and in the implementation of the scheme.

Ciara O’Gara, one of the students on the scheme, had this to say:

”This scheme is a step forward for the Irish language community in the North, helping to take Irish out of the classroom and back to being a living language, a language that people use daily and naturally in their lives”

She also said that it gives them the opportunity to hold a special role in the Irish langauge comminuty in Belfast.
